City of Reno approves additional funding for the Geiger Grade Horse Fencing project

The Reno City Council approved a specific wild horse fencing project near Geiger Grade on October 8, which is the mountain road (Nevada state route 341) connecting Reno to Virginia City, Nevada.

The project is aimed at installing and improving fencing along Geiger Grade and in parts of South Reno / the Virginia range, to reduce conflicts between wild/feral horses and vehicles, residential areas, and private property.

The City of Reno has taken charge in various phases of the fencing project, design, and funding, especially for the "Horse Protection Project" phases.

Another goal is to redirect the horses away from roads and into safer range areas, providing them with access to water sources. Visibility is important so horses clearly see the fence.

Council member Duerr adds, "We've actually been working on the project last year, and we completed about half the project, so we completed a wildlife preserve area, which provides water to all animals, including horses. That's a good deterrent to keep them off the roads and also get food and water, especially during the difficult drought months."

The project's goal is to complete a continuous barrier-fencing from Kenneth Way to Toll Road, connecting with existing fence lines.

Reno and Washoe County have dealt with wild horse issues for some time now.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has installed more than 500 miles of wildlife fencing across the state of Nevada.

This project will help reduce vehicle-horse related collisions, creating a safer and more sharable space for wildlife and humanity into it."
