Local Spotlight: Family caregivers are backbone of services, support

California is home to one of the fastest-growing aging populations in the nation, and the state is taking action to ensure older adults and their caregivers thrive.

Family caregivers are the backbone of long-term care. Without them, there wouldn't be enough facilities, doctors or hospitals to meet the needs of an aging population expected to grow significantly in the next two decades.

The California Department of Aging supports these caregivers through programs like In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), which connects nearly 600,000 older adults and people with disabilities to essential care. In addition, California Caregiver Resource Centers, including Del Oro, provide free services such as counseling, legal assistance, support groups and respite care to help caregivers manage stress and maintain their own health.

"Our mission is to improve the well-being of family caregivers," said Susan DeMarois, director of the California Department of Aging. "We want to give them the tools, training and resources they need to succeed."

California's commitment to aging well is rooted in community voices and forward-thinking planning. By supporting caregivers today, the state is building a stronger, healthier future for all generations.
