Cybercriminals are increasingly using illegal streams of Premier League matches to target Vietnamese football fans, exposing them to malware, scams, and data theft.
The campaign encourages fans to choose official and secure broadcasting channels. It warns that accessing pirated websites or using illegal streaming devices (ISDs) can pose serious cybersecurity threats and compromise personal information.
Cybercriminals often exploit these services to spread malware and conduct phishing schemes, putting users at risk of financial fraud and identity theft. Many of these platforms also display harmful and inappropriate content, endangering both individual users and their families.
A recent study by cybersecurity expert Professor Paul Watters found that nearly all illegal streaming websites are loaded with malicious code, scams, or spam content.
These platforms are notorious for displaying dangerous advertisements related to gambling, adult content, and various fraudulent schemes.
In Vietnam, illegal streaming websites are nearly ten times more likely to contain malware than legitimate platforms. The study revealed that 72% of pirated sites host malware, phishing attempts, or advanced scams. Additionally, 95% of advertisements on these websites carry harmful content.
Illegal streaming devices and pirated apps can also steal personal data and hijack users' internet connections for unlawful activities, potentially implicating users in criminal investigations.
Professor Watters warned: "Pirated streaming sites not only violate intellectual property laws but also pose serious cybersecurity risks. Our research shows that they are often tied to digital infrastructures used by cybercriminals for fraud, extortion, and other illegal acts. ISDs also contribute to these threats, as they can be covertly exploited to create proxy networks, effectively turning users' homes into nodes in global cybercrime operations."
Kevin Plumb, General Counsel of the Premier League, emphasized: "Watching pirated streams may seem harmless, but the risks go far beyond poor video quality. Cybersecurity experts have consistently shown how dangerous these websites and devices are. We are working closely with broadcasters and authorities in various countries to combat piracy. However, the methods used by pirates are becoming increasingly sophisticated and harder to detect."
Axel Gallant, CEO of K+, added: "Football represents passion, unity, and integrity - values that K+ is committed to upholding. Our partnership with the Premier League reflects our shared dedication to protecting the game and the millions of fans in Vietnam who love it. Piracy not only violates intellectual property rights but also endangers user data, privacy, and digital well-being. Through collective efforts and collaboration with the Premier League and local authorities, K+ is building a safe, trusted, and sustainable viewing environment where the spirit of sport and fan interests come first."
