Fabrizio Romano Drops 'Important' Update on Man Utd Signing Midfielder

Manchester United want to make a change in midfield and will bring in a new player in 2026 and potentially as soon as January, according to GIVEMESPORT Senior Correspondent Fabrizio Romano.

The Old Trafford outfit have endured a difficult start to the season under Ruben Amorim, winning just three of their first seven Premier League games, and could be open to the idea of bolstering their squad mid-campaign.

United tried to sign Atletico Madrid and England star Conor Gallagher in the final days of the summer transfer window, and now the Red Devils could also explore a similar deal for another midfielder in January.

Romano suggests it will all depend on the opportunities as the January market is not usually a month when clubs make big-money deals, which could see United explore another last-minute move, potentially a loan deal.

Man United Want Important Midfield Signing in 2026

Romano, speaking on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast on Wednesday, revealed that Man United have earmarked midfield as an 'important' area to address in 2026, with a new signing on the agenda for Amorim:

"Yeah, I think it's a possibility for Man United to go for a new midfielder in January. Then, in this case, it will depend on opportunities.

"I don't think the January window, not just for Man United, but in general, is about big, big names moving.

"So, unless there is an opportunity for a big name, I think that has to be the window of maybe a loan deal or a last-minute chance on the market.

"For example, Man United tried for Conor Gallagher in the final days of the summer transfer window.

"So that kind of opportunity, in case he becomes available, or any other player with that kind of skill becomes available on a good deal, maybe on a loan with an option to buy, for Man United might be interesting, but at the moment, we are not in that direction.

"Again, it's still very early before saying the club's actively working on these kinds of deals. But what I can tell you is that Man United in 2026, whether it's going to be January or summer transfer, want to change something in the midfield, and so that's going to be an important position to cover."

United's summer business saw them spend over £200 million on new signings, including forwards Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

On the final day of the summer window, the Old Trafford side also added goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who finally made his Premier League debut in the 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend.

United turned their focus towards Lammens after failing in their efforts to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, whom the south coast club were unwilling to sell.

A new midfielder in 2026 could arrive as a replacement for Casemiro, who turns 34 in February and has less than a year left on his contract, which expires in June.
