The Thursday Murder Club jumps to top of Netflix's worldwide streaming chart

The Thursday Murder Club, the new murder-mystery from Netflix, has shot to the top of the streamer's charts.

The film, based on Richard Osman's 2020 novel of the same name, follows four elderly amateur sleuths as they investigate a murder in their local community, which was previously considered idyllic.

Boasting a stacked leading cast of Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imrie, the highly-anticipated film was finally released on Netflix on Thursday (28 August), and it looks to have been a hit with viewers.

As per FlixPatrol, the murder-mystery is currently the streamer's most-viewed film in both the UK and across the world, beating competition such as KPop Demon Hunters and Fall for Me.

It was also the most-watched film in the UK on Friday (29 August), though it was only #2 worldwide on that particular day. Over on the TV side, the most popular series in the UK is Hostage, while My Life with the Walter Boys tops the worldwide TV chart.

In addition to the aforementioned quartet, The Thursday Murder Club also features David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Tom Ellis and Richard E Grant, who appear in supporting roles.

There was one notable absentee, however, with Sarah Niles's role as the mother of Ackie's character having to be cut from the film due to confusion that arose in early test screenings for the film.

"In the montage at the end of the film, you see various cuts of the Thursday Murder Club and there was a scene shot of Chris Hudson arriving at Donna's door and meeting her mother for the first time," explained director Chris Columbus.

"I actually had to cut the scene because the audience who saw the film thought that Chris was actually meeting Donna and taking her on a date. It stopped them for a moment and I thought I don't want the audience to feel that anything creepy is going on."
