In August 2025, naamsa reported that 51 880 new vehicles were sold in South Africa; an increase of 18.7% over the same month in 2024. Of the latter figure, an estimated 43 196 units represented dealer sales, 12.1% to the rental industry, 2.3% to corporate fleets, and 2.3% government sales. Noteworthy, in August 2025, the new passenger-car sales recorded were the highest since September 2025, with 36 914 units sold in the eighth month of 2025.
Taking a closer look at sales of new light commercial vehicles (LCVs), this segment also showed an increase in sales, with the 12 326 units sold signifying a 15.1% increase over August 2024's 10 710 units sold.
Toyota once again topped the list of South Africa's best-selling car brands, with the Hilux, which we sampled in Legend 55 guise in August 2025, leading the Japanese automaker's local sales. In August 2025, Hilux sales recorded an increase of 205 units over July 2025.
Although Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max sales were down by 102 and 224 units, respectively, the Blue Oval brand's bakkie and the Isuzu retained their respective second and third spots on the podium. Rounding out the top five were the Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up and GWM P-Series - the latter of which made its return to the list. In August 2025, 675 customers put pen to paper for the Mahindra, while P-Series sales were up by 162 units compared to July 2025.
So, which bakkies missed out on the top five? Well, the Toyota Land Cruiser 79, which claimed fifth spot in July 2025, placed sixth in the eighth month of the year, with the Japanese automaker's rugged 4×4 bakkie registering 446 units sold. Volkswagen's Amarok, of which a 222 kW model has been confirmed for South Africa, came in seventh place, with 359 units sold. In August 2025, 333 new Navara units found homes.
