SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) -- A listeria outbreak due to supplement shakes has killed 12 people in 21 states, some of which are in states near Utah.
The outbreak is related to Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco supplement shakes, which had been distributed in long-term care facilities and to people on "medically necessary soft diets." They are not available to the general public.
The states known for having the outbreak that has affected 38 people are Washington, California, Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio, West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut and New York. The state with the most infections appears to be Texas, according to data from the CDC.
"This outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses, and the true number of sick people is likely higher than the number reported," the CDC said.
Officials said listeria cases may date back to 2018, but most were within 2024 and 2025.
Symptoms of listeria include fever, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or seizures. It is particularly dangerous for pregnant woman, people 65 and older or people with weaker immune systems.
