Skyridge Overcomes Injuries To Topple American Fork

AMERICAN FORK, Utah - The Skyridge Falcons overcame an injury to starting QB Kaneal Sweetwyne to down the American Fork Cavemen 26-14.

The Cavemen hosted Skyridge in the Game Night Live regular season finale on Wednesday, October 15.

The game started as a defensive battle with both teams punting on their first possessions.

American Fork's offense never got going, while the Falcons had a promising drive end with an interception in the end zone.

Skyridge QB Kaneal Sweetwyne found some space early in the second. The athletic signal-caller gave his team a 7-0 lead when Sweetwyne rumbled 35 yards up the middle for a touchdown with 8:15 left in the half.

The Falcons' defense followed by forcing a punt, but Sweetwyne couldn't keep the momentum. Early in the next drive, Sweetwyne's second interception of the night gave American Fork the football in Skyridge territory.

The Cavemen went deep on first down. QB Nate Childs threw a perfect deep shot that sophomore WR Ty Holmstead reeled in on a dead sprint into the end zone.

The 46-yard TD tied the game 7-7 with just over six minutes left in the half.

Skyridge answered when Lincoln Tahi crossed the goal line on a nine-yard rush to take a 13-7 halftime lead.

AF took the football first but was forced to punt from near midfield.

Skyridge added to its lead when WR Adam Warren got behind the defense and was wide open for a 52-yard catch and run TD.

The Falcons led 20-7 after the extra point.

American Fork's passing game came alive on the next drive. Childs connected with Holmstead on two different deep pass plays, including a 27-yard bomb in the corner of the end zone on 4th and 3.

Sweetwyne was forced off the field with an apparent injury on the next drive, forcing Skyridge to insert sophomore Jagger Fountaine at QB.

A 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Cavemen with 7:39 left. A low snap allowed American Fork to knock the attempt down and then recover the football near Falcon territory.

The Cavemen gave the football back after a turnover on downs.

Minutes later, Skyridge increased its lead to 12 points on a blown defensive coverage. Fountaine scrambled to his right before throwing a ball up for grabs, before getting hit. The ball dropped into the waiting arms of Omarian Sanders for six points.

The Falcons were able to run the clock out after a late interception ended AF's hopes of a miraculous comeback.
