A political group which goes by the name "FUTURE OYO" has called on the main opposition party in the state , The All Progressives Congress Party to protect the future of the party and Oyo people in general by resisting the fielding of candidates they termed as "Absconders with selfish Ambition" as the 2027 elections approach.
This was conveyed through an analogical statement from the group made available to pressmen in Ibadan Sunday evening, and which reads:
"A call to Oyo state and APC: Protect Our Future, Reject Absconders with Selfish Ambition ".
"The elders in a community caution that the sacrificial àkàrà (bean cake) should not be given to an Àbíkú to share. When asked why, they responded that the Àbíkú will merely make his or her kindred spirits the sole beneficiaries.
Now the very essence of the sacrificial àkàrà (bean cake) was to avert sudden death in the community.
The elders had to further caution against giving it to the wrong person, because the tragedy (ultimate death), which the sacrifice is designed to avert will eventually happen.
Àbíkú which the Igbo call Ogbanje dies and returns to the same parents as many times as he or she can muster before he or she is 'overpowered'.
Àbíkú is a pain in the neck of his or her parents through frequent and indeterminable death.
This simple narration is akin to some politicians in our midst. They come and go at will without shame and principles, courtesy of their deep pockets.
As we approach the critical party primaries and gubernatorial elections in 2026 and 2027 respectively, we must be vigilant and be well informed. This is because we have politicians with a proven track records of selfishness, abscondment and disloyalty, who for the record time will come seeking our votes, armed with a war chest of ill-gotten wealth. We must not let their riches of buy- over get us napping. If we are caught napping again with their usual spoiler game this time around, it may spell irretractable
doom for the party in the state. Twice beaten is a doom.
These individuals have consistently shown that they are not faithful to our party, or the people. Some know they are not wanted by the majority, yet they use their wealth to buy supports and votes and silence the opposition. Their history of abandoning our party in the state after losing elections is a stark reminder of their true character. No one can bleach the leopard's stripes.
They are users, not leaders. They exploit people for their own gains, then discard them like yesterday's trash. They are always absent from public life, except during election years, and this speaks volumes about their priorities.
Moreover, their personal lives and businesses are in shambles. Their ventures, once thriving, now stand as shadows of their former selves. How can we trust such politicians to manage our party and our State affairs?
We deserve better this time around. Let's reject selfish politicians and their toxic hand-outs in front of cameras. Let's choose leaders who are with us, committed to us, committed to our party, and our people with and without election. Let's choose leaders who have proven track records of service, integrity, humility and loyalty.
We do not need candidates who don't understand and cannot be reached or touched with our feelings and infirmities.
Our party's and state's future is at stake. Let's protect it by making an informed decision at the primaries and the polls. Let us reject selfish ambition, and choose leaders who are ready and willing to serve us, not just themselves.
Let us Vote for the better candidates, not the ones with the deepest pockets.
The time is now and no room for Àbíkú politicians who come and go at will.
