Oceanit donates thousands of COVID test kits to local schools | Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Honolulu-based Oceanit this week said it has donated thousands of its ASSURE-100 COVID rapid test kits to schools across Oahu.

The test kits, authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, were developed by Oceanit scientists and engineers locally.

Oceanit worked with the Hawaii Department of Education to provide the free test kits to public schools, and is giving them to private schools, as well, ahead of flu season.

"We want our students in school, learning safely, every day," said Hawaii Superintendent Keith Hayashi in a statement. "These test kits will help schools respond quickly during flu season and give families added peace of mind. And it's inspiring for our students to know this kind of innovation is happening right here in Hawaii. It shows them what's possible in their own future."

Oftentimes, symptoms of flu and COVID, such as fever, cough and congestion, are very similar.

Testing is recommended for those with cold or flu symptoms, especially those at higher risk, to help get the right treatment.

Oceanit said the donation is also part of its broader mission to strengthen local communities and to inspire Hawaii's youth of the "cutting-edge science and engineering happening in their own backyard."

"By placing the ASSURE-100 tests directly into the hands of school communities, Oceanit hopes to both safeguard health and spark curiosity in the next generation of scientists and engineers," said the company in a news release.
