Here's the best time to catch the Perseids meteor shower

(WFSB) - The Perseids meteor shower peaks Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

NASA said that during the peak in a very darkened sky, viewers might be able to catch about 25 meteors per hour.

"The Perseids are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere during the pre-dawn hours, though at times it is possible to view meteors from this shower as early as 10 p.m.," NASA said.

Channel 3 meteorologist Jill Gilardi said folks in Connecticut will have their best shot at seeing the shower after midnight.

"Unfortunately, you can typically see a lot of Perseids, [but] only the brightest will be visible," Gilardi said. "The peak is after midnight. We'll have clear skies early, but that bright moon is going to ruin the display."

She said the moon rises at about 9:35 p.m.

The Perseids originate from the Swift-Tuttle comet.
