People across the UK will be able to spot the Northern Lights in the sky tonight, according to experts.
A red aurora alert was issued on Wednesday night by physicists at the University of Lancaster, who monitor geomagnetic activity to predict when Britons are most likely to spot the spectacular sight.
Meteorological experts from the Met Office also said the onset of a fast solar wind and a solar phenomenon known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) could mean Britons could see the Aurora Borealis tonight.
The witness added that it was most likely in northern Scotland and less likely further south. But forecasters warned it could be a rainy night for parts of Northern Ireland and northern England.
Graphics shared by the Met Office show the aurora in the sky is likely to peak at 9pm, then decline, and then rise again at 2am on Thursday.
The Aurora Borealis is a remarkable atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when CMEs erupt from the Sun and travel at speeds of millions of kilometers per hour. When pointed towards Earth, they can interact with the planet's magnetic field and trigger geomagnetic storms, which in turn can produce auroras.
Most commonly seen in the aurora oval around Iceland, the famous lights appear as amazingly colorful lights in the sky. According to the British Geological Survey, the color of light depends on the molecules affected. Oxygen, nitrogen and other gases in the atmosphere have unique colors, which results in the blue, green, yellow and red ranges observed in the aurora.
Scientists at the University of Lancaster issued the alert at 6.18pm on Wednesday, saying a red alert means "it is likely that the Northern Lights will be visible to the eye and camera from anywhere in the UK".
The chart shows activity measured in nanotesla, a unit of magnetic field strength. This evening it reached around 280nT.
The Northern Lights were last visible in the UK last month, with several sightings occurring on several nights, particularly in northern England.
