Magpies march on after in FA Cup after keepers heroic shootout display

WIMBORNE Town Women have once again made history with victory over Shaftesbury Ladies in the Adobe Women's FA Cup on Saturday.

The Magpies' inaugural cup run continued with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Rockies at the Wyatt Homes Stadium.

Goalkeeper Tegan Barnes saved all three of the Rockies spot kicks to help send her team into the third qualifying round for the first time in the club's history.

The two Dorset sides were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Sheree Bell Jack on target for the Magpies.

Jess Boyle, Freya Patton and Jess Selby then scored form 12 yards in the shootout as Barnes denied Shaftesbury with a player of the match performance between the sticks.

It now means that the club is just one game away from the first round proper of the competition, an amazing achievement for their first appearance in the competition.

The team's manager, Sean Hill was delighted with the team's performance and is hoping for another home draw to keep the run going.

Speaking to the Echo, he said: "It's been brilliant. It's the first time in the FA Cup for the team and to get through is massive.

"It would be huge if we made if we made the first round proper. It would mean everything for the people who put in the effort, time and commitment a the club.

"We have a lot of young players in the squad that have come up from the under 18s so it be really special for them.

"We are just hoping for a home draw now."

On Barnes' player of the match performance, Hill added: "She was brilliant - she saved all three penalties.

"We have a really good team ethos and we banded together. I was a little nervous (during the shootout) but I wasn't worried."

Elsewhere in the cup Weymouth Women were also victorious with a 2-0 win over Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police whilst Poole Town beat Ridegway Ladies 3-0.

Both side will find out their third qualifying round opponents at 1pm today.
