Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its yellow alert for Goa until Oct 20, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds. The alert forecasts thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30-40kmph, gusting up to 50kmph in South Goa, and light to moderate rain in North Goa.These weather disturbances are attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilting southward with height. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop around October 19 over the same region, off the coasts of Kerala and Karnataka.Despite the expected rainfall, the IMD warns that temperatures will remain high, offering little relief. Maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours are forecast to hover around 33°C, with minimum temperatures near 25°C.On Thursday, very light to light rainfall was recorded at a few locations across Goa, with moderate rainfall at isolated spots. Panaji experienced a maximum temperature of 34.5°C and a minimum of 25°C, with humidity levels reaching 76%.Residents, especially in South Goa, are advised to stay alert and take precautions as thunderstorms and gusty winds could cause disruptions.
