Huge Spanish ship visiting city this week after initial delay - Liverpool Echo

The Galeón Andalucía ship is finally expected to arrive in Liverpool this week after being delayed. The huge vessel is a replica of the legendary Spanish galleons, which sailed the world's oceans for three centuries.

The ship was initially supposed to visit and open its decks to the public at the Royal Albert Dock from Tuesday, September 9 to Sunday, September 21. However, the team behind the ship confirmed to the ECHO this wouldn't be the case due to the weather conditions at the time.

A spokesperson explained how the ship wasn't able to leave its previous port so therefore its arrival date to Liverpool had to be pushed back. The ship is now due in to Liverpool on Wednesday, September 24 and will be here until Sunday, October 5.

The Galeón Andalucía ship was docked in Shoreham Port after extending its stay due to popular demand. The ship will then visit Liverpool as part of its world tour.

The Galeón Andalucía is a unique replica of the Spanish galleons that departed from the Andalusian coasts between the 16th and 18th centuries. They sailed the Atlantic, navigated the Caribbean and American coasts, and covered the vast Pacific route.

It is an impressive 55-metre-long ship with six decks, made from iroko and pine wood, and with nearly 1,000 square metres of sail across its masts. It was built in Punta Umbría (Huelva) with meticulous historical accuracy.

Visitors to the ship will be able to visit five of its decks, where there will be an exhibition. The Galeón has already sailed more than 100,000 nautical miles across seas, visiting ports on four continents, including London, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, New York, and Quebec.

Royal Albert Dock estate manager, Sean Morrison, said: "We are incredibly excited to welcome the magnificent Galeón Andalucía to the Royal Albert Dock for its first-ever visit to Liverpool.

"It's a huge privilege to host such an impressive vessel, which will be a major attraction for both locals and tourists seeing it set against the backdrop of our historic waterfront. The ship will be docked at Canning Half Tide Dock, a site managed by the Canal & River Trust, and we look forward to a fantastic two weeks of celebrating maritime history and heritage."

Adult (£12), child five to 10 years (£6) and family tickets of two adults and up to three children between five and 10 (£30) can be purchased from the Galeón Andalucía website.

This isn't the first historic ship to visit the city in this month. One of the world's "most spectacular" tall ships arrived in Liverpool, with members of the public being able to go on board.

The Peruvian navy sailing training ship, B.A.P. Unión, docked at the city's Pier Head on Sunday, August 31. The visit was a part of a celebration of Wirral's links with the South American country.

Alongside this, the city also welcomed the return of the Cunard's Queen Mary 2. The flagship arrived in Liverpool on Wednesday, September 17, having called at Cobh, southern Ireland before departing bound for Oban, Scotland on Friday, September 19.
