Pierce Brosnan Has One Demand For James Bond's Future Under Amazon

Pierce Brosnan has become the latest former star of the James Bond franchise to share his thoughts on its future under the control of Amazon MGM Studios. Since the news broke that the world of Bond is changing hands, with long-term creatives Barbara Broccoli and Warren G. Wilson stepping away from the IP and handing over complete creative control to Amazon, there are many people linked to the franchise that have added their opinions on what it means to see Bond become an Amazon property.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the 71-year-old, who played the role of Bond in four movies starting with 1995's Goldeneye, shared how the change did not really come as much of a surprise, and in the end, "everything changes, everything falls." He said:

"In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament. I thought it was coming for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael. It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.

History has been passed on and I'm very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies that I made with Barbara and Michael. That we moved the needle, that we brought it back to life. It had been dormant [for] six years and GoldenEye was such a success that it continued and went from strength to strength...You know, everything changes, everything falls apart, and I wish them well."

Timothy Dalton Previously Shared His View on Bond's Future

Prior to Brosnan's run as James Bond, Timothy Dalton appeared in two movies in the franchise that are often overlooked, and in many ways were a precursor to the more brutal movies of Daniel Craig. When previously discussing his feelings about the shift in the franchise, Dalton said of Broccoli's tenure:

"Barbara is one of the best women in the whole world. I think she's fantastic. Around a Bond movie, everyone's got an opinion. That tends to make something less special, but if you keep it to people who know what they're doing and know what they want, then it will sharpen up and be good. Barbara had that."

When it comes to where things will go in the future, Dalton really doesn't know what to expect, but noted that he believed it to be "sad" to think that anything could drastically change and potentially damage its legacy.

"I have no idea what Amazon would do with it, and I have no idea what the relationship of Amazon to the Broccolis will be. But it is a damn fine series of movies. I was watching it when I was young, we all were. It's been a part of our lives, so anything that threatens it is kind of sad."

James Bond

Summary

James Bond, code name 007, is a fictional character created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short story collections. There have been six other authors who wrote authorised Bond novels or novelizations after Fleming's death in 1964: Kingsley Amis, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks and Jeffery Deaver; a new novel, written by William Boyd, is planned for release in 2013. Additionally, Charlie Higson wrote a series on a young James Bond and Kate Westbrook wrote three novels based on the diaries of a recurring series character, Moneypenny. The fictional British Secret Service agent has also been adapted for television, radio, comic strip and video game formats as well as being used in the longest running and the second-highest grossing film franchise to date, which started in 1962 with Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as Bond. As of 2012, there have been twenty two films in the Eon Productions series, with a twenty third, Skyfall, due for release on 26 October 2012. The film will star Daniel Craig in his third portrayal of Bond: he is the sixth actor to play Bond in the Eon series. There have also been two independent productions of Bond films, Casino Royale, a 1967 spoof, and Never Say Never Again, a 1983 remake of an earlier Eon-produced film, Thunderball. The films are renowned for a number of features, including the musical accompaniment, with the theme songs to the films having picked up Academy Award nominations on several occasions. Other important elements which run through most of the films include Bond's cars, his guns and the gadgets he is supplied with by Q Branch.
