A little extra time was needed to decide an exciting Thompson Okanagan Junior Varsity Football League battle Thursday, Oct. 9, at Greater Vernon Athletic Park.
The Seaton/Kalamalka Sonics of Vernon-Coldstream scored in the extra time to defeat the Pleasant Valley Hawks 13-7.
PVSS got the ball to start OT on the Sonics' 10-yard line. Seaton/Kal's defence did not budge and kept PVSS from scoring.
The Sonics then got the ball, and on their first play, the ball was pitched to Ty Johannson, who muscled his way behind some great block into the end zone for the score and the win.
Seaton took the lead in the first half and held a 7-0 advantage until Hawks quarterback Damian McCormack scrambled into the end zone in the second half. Patrick Gilbert booted the convert to force OT.
McCormack came back into the game after being injured on a tackle in the first half. He was the Hawks' offensive player of the game. Ryder Rodger, who filled for McCormack at QB, was a force on both sides of the ball. Rodger was named defensive player of the game for the Hawks for making a number of tackles, and laying out punishing hits.
The Sonics looked to have scored a second touchdown in the second quarter, but the major was negated by a holding penalty against Seaton.
The game was the back end of a doubleheader at GVAP Thursday.
The early contest saw the Salmon Arm Golds score twice in the second half for a 14-0 win over the Fulton Maroons.
On a very cold, windy Wednesday night, Oct. 8, at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, the Vernon Panthers scored a 27-6 victory over the host South Kamloops Titans.
Bennett Friesen scored a pair of first-half majors, while Hunter Shalaby added a third to give the Cats a 20-0 lead at half. Jett Hamilton booted two converts, and his third attempt was blocked.
The only Panthers scoring in the second half came on a Davis Gordon touchdown, with Hamilton booting the convert.
The game gave Vernon coaches a chance to play many different players to prepare for upcoming games.
The Panthers (2-0) will take on Salmon Arm (1-0) Wednesday, Oct. 15, 5 p.m. at GVAP.
The Hawks (0-2) travel to Kamloops to tangle with the Westsyde/Valleyview Blue Wave Oct. 15 at Hillside Stadium. The Maroons (0-2) will also play at Hillside that day against South Kamloops (1-1).
Seaton/Kalamalka has a bye until Thursday, Oct. 23, when they will visit the Titans in Kamloops.
