Greece breaks records in organ donations, transplants | eKathimerini.com

Greece's organ transplant program reached new milestones in 2024, with a record number of donations and recipients, aiming to match European standards. The Greek Transplant Organization (EOM) reported 111 deceased organ donors, 125 living kidney and liver donors, and 361 transplant recipients.

A key achievement was a reduction in family refusals for organ donations, dropping to 26%, matching European levels. EOM President Georgios Papatheodoridis highlighted that proper public education is key to increasing consent for organ donations.

In 2024, intensive care units (ICUs) contributed significantly to the donor pool, with major hospitals like Attikon and Sotiria leading the way. The introduction of local transplant coordinators has been critical, with their number increasing from seven to 20, covering major hospitals nationwide.

The EOM aims to reach 20 donors per million people, aligning with European averages. Papatheodoridis stressed the importance of quality in transplant outcomes, especially in heart and lung transplants, where Greece has exceeded international survival rates.
