PHOENIX (AZFamily) -- A traffic stop in Phoenix escalated into a fight and ended with a suspect shot by an officer on Sunday near 25th Street and Cactus Road.
Jafet Baez Gomez was just getting ready to head out to the pool to enjoy his Memorial Day weekend when he heard shouting outside his window. He captured video of the incident from his balcony.
"They were fighting and then when I turned around, I saw the guy throwing punches and the cop moving back," Baez Gomez said.
Phoenix Police say an officer pulled over a man, and the suspect got out of his car to argue before the officer even stopped his cruiser. "The guy just launched on him. I pulled out my phone. He (the suspect) was going straight to his face," Baez Gomez said.
In the video, you can see a good Samaritan in a black T-shirt try to help, but he could not get the man off the officer. At one point, it appears the man bear hugs the officer, lifting him off the ground. You hear one pop during the scuffle and then several more after the officer breaks free.
"You hear a pow, and I saw him grab his leg, and the cop had a moment to get himself together," Baez Gomez said.
In a statement, a Phoenix Police spokesperson Sgt. Brian Bower said the suspect was trying to grab the officer's gun:
"As the fight continued, the driver attempted to grab the officer's gun from its holster. The officer unholstered his weapon and fired one round, striking the man in the lower extremity. Additional officers got to the scene and applied a tourniquet to the man. Phoenix Fire responded and took him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."
Police have not provided a specific reason for the man being pulled over. The officer was treated and released for his injuries.
