Defection: Enugu traditional rulers throws weight behind Gov. Mbah

...Says defection will open more doors of federal support

The Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers have drummed up their support for the state Governor, Dr Peter Mbah following his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday October 14, 2025.

In a communique issued by the council on Tuesday, the royal fathers in the state said that the defection will open more doors of federal support to the state.

The communique which was variously signed by HRM Igwe Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers; Emeritus Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers HRM Igwe Julius Nnaji, 1st Deputy Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers; Chairman, Enugu East Zonal Council of Traditional Rulers and other prominent traditional rulers and made available to Daily Sun prayed for divine protection of the governor.

"We, the undersigned, on behalf of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, after due consultations and deliberations at our expanded council meeting held at the Council Secretariat, Enugu, this 14th day of October, 2025, hereby issue the following

communiqué:

"The Council acknowledges the visionary, reform-driven leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose administration continues to redefine governance through innovation, infrastructural renewal, and a steadfast commitment to the welfare and prosperity of Ndi Enugu.

"As guardians of peace, unity, and moral order, we uphold the constitutional right of every citizen including our esteemed Governor to freely associate with any political party of choice in furtherance of democratic principles and effective governance.

"The Council views the Governor's decision to realign politically with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a strategic and forward-thinking step aimed at deepening Enugu State's integration with the Federal Government. This move will, undoubtedly, open wider doors for federal support, partnership, and socio-economic advancement for the benefit of all citizens."

The Communique further stated that "the Council calls upon all traditional rulers, political stakeholders, and citizens across the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State to remain united, peaceful, and development-focused. Political diversity should never divide our shared aspiration for progress and prosperity.

"We reaffirm our unwavering loyalty and support to His Excellency, Dr. Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as he continues to deliver impactful governance, strengthen institutions, and uplift every community through his 'Tomorrow Is Here' development agenda."

"We invoke the guidance and blessings of our revered ancestors upon His Excellency and his administration. May their spirits continue to endow him with wisdom, courage, and divine favour as he leads Enugu State toward enduring peace, unity, and prosperity.

Our reporter gathered that the governor defected to the APC alongside all commissioners, and elected chairpersons of all 17 local government areas in the state, among others.

In a state-wide broadcast to the people of the state, the governor defended his decision to switch from the People Democratic Party (PDP) to APC, saying the move was necessitated to connect the South-Eastern state to the central government.
