Coronation Street fans have been left 'sobbing' as Carla Connor's moment with Betsy Swain sparked a 'should have been' reaction as they remembered her past.
After her last failed proposal attempt last month, the Underworld factory boss set about doing things the right way this time as she once again plotted to ask Lisa Swain to marry her.
As fans of the ITV soap will recall, Carla first attempted to ask Lisa to marry her a few weeks ago by setting up what she thought would be a nice way of popping the question in the Rovers Return.
Having nervously ordered a ring, with only her nephew Ryan Connor and Rovers manager Glenda Shuttleworth in the know, Carla headed to the boozer and waited for who she was hoping would be her future wife.
Lisa, however, arrived late, they were soon interrupted by Debbie Webster. The hotel owner was heard asking the couple for their thoughts on her own wedding invites which got Lisa chatting.
Debbie quizzed Lisa on how her late wife, Becky, popped the question and it was then when Carla's plan fell apart. She explained that Becky had arranged for them to go out to a restaurant where she popped the engagement ring in a glass of fizz.
As she retold the story, Glenda was on her way over with glasses of champagne as Carla was about to propose in the same way before bringing it to a halt.
But during Monday's (September 1) trip to the cobbles, Carla was seen approaching Lisa's daughter Betsy for a chat with her step-daughter quick to give some typical teenage cheek.
"I want to ask you a question, alright?" Carla said, as she nervously sat down on the sofa. As Carla struggled to get her words out, Betsy mocked the 'birds and the bees' chat, before she blurted out: "I want to ask your mum to marry me!"
Betsy seemed stunned into silence as she let go of Carla's hands and sunk back into the sofa. "Is this the worst idea you've ever heard?" Carla panicked. Betsy went on to question Carla over her intentions with Lisa, before she asked: "What if I said no?"
Carla didn't quite know how to react, saying she'd have to "think about it" before Betsy put her out of her misery. "Carla, like I would say no! This is the happiest I've seen her in a long time, you have my blessing," she said before they both burst into giggles and embraced.
So enthusiastic about Carla popping the question, Betsy helped her setup what was designed to be an intimate proposal in the garden of their new home, No.6 Coronation Street.
Eventually, as Carla led Lisa outside and played some music, David Platt made an appearance to complain about the noise. Things only get worse when David looked through his recycling bin to find various bits of paper and magazines that the Connor-Swains have sneakily put inside, with the bin wars clearly ongoing.
He started to throw their recycling back over their fence, and as Lisa tried to tidy them up, she spotted ta piece of paper containing the name Tia Wardley, which fans will recall was given to Carla when she visited Logan Radcliffe in prison to get answers about the death of Lisa's late wife, Becky.
The mood quickly turned sour, with Lisa thinking that Carla had continued her search for the woman behind her back, and completely scuppering Carla's second proposal attempt.
But it was the moment between Carla and Betsy that got Corrie fans emotional as it also reminded them of Carla's heartbreaking past. @carlascopper said: "Betsy setting up the garden and calling carla 'mommy' I'm sobbing." @SwarlaApp wrote: "Okay! I just cried!! The way Carla is with Betsy I can't cope!"
@TVMusings22 commented: "Seeing Carla be the mum she should've been in 2014. This is everything #Corrie." @bensonjareau typed: "The daughter she deserved. That's HER babygirl fr #Corrie #swarla."
@swiftlyivy noted: "From Roy telling Carla she 'would have made an excellent mother' to Carla asking Betsy's permission to propose to Lisa knowing it's the happiest they've every been. Oh that's her family, THAT'S HER DAUGHTER. "@MargheritAxen shared: "What an incredible growth from Betsy. She loves Carla so much to help her with the proposal and to take her side with Lisa. They are my family."
@_Penny93 posted: "Love this scene... betsy won't ever replace carla's baby, just as carla won't replace becky - but they so obviously heal something within each other... loved carla's relationship with simon, but there's something so special about her now having a girl." @buffonias added: "Carla and betsy make me cry i love them so much."
