LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - The newly appointed chancellor for the Texas Tech University System pledged to protect free speech and the exchange of ideas during his tenure in West Texas.
Brandon Creighton made that commitment during a Turning Point USA rally in south Lubbock Wednesday night. It was his first public event since the Texas Tech Board of Regents hired him to succeed Tedd Mitchell last week.
Creighton said the system will champion freedom of speech and expression while protecting students from politically motivated harassment or violence.
"My door will always be open to every single viewpoint on campus and to every opinion that would make our campus and our state and our nation better and that's the way free speech works. That's why it's the first amendment," Creighton said.
Creighton will step into the role officially on Nov. 19. Mitchell will stay on as an advisor and chancellor emeritus.
