A WARRINGTON leisure centre's pools and dance studio will remain closed after a 'potential asbestos-containing material' has been found.
Earlier this month, the Warrington Guardian reported that the pools and dance studio at Woolston Neighbourhood Hub have been closed until further notice.
The 'unexpected essential maintenance issues' caused the initial closure of the pools in July and were 'being investigated'.
Now, a spokesperson for Warrington Borough Council has confirmed that a material potentially containing asbestos has been found.
"As part of the inspection works at Woolston Leisure Centre, contractors have identified a potential asbestos-containing material (ACM), alongside signs of possible wet or dry rot under the flooring within the dance studio," the spokesperson said.
"Due to any potential health risk to service users, we have suspended all fitness classes until an asbestos survey and investigation work into the issue has been undertaken.
"We are waiting for the specialist contractors to confirm a date for when the works can take place.
"There has been no disturbance of any persons who have used the facility. Suspending all fitness classes is a precautionary measure."
While the closure is ongoing, LiveWire members can access the swimming pools and fitness classes at the other leisure sites across Warrington, including Great Sankey, Orford, Bewsey and Dallam and Broomfields.
"There will be an impact on public swim sessions across all of our site, as we look to relocate some programmed activities such as swimming lessons, during the closure," a spokesperson for LiveWire said.
"We will continue to keep members updated about the works and when we expect the pools and dance studio to reopen.
"We appreciate that the closure of the pools and dance studio will cause disruption, and we are sorry for the inconvenience this temporary closure will cause."
