Synchronous Fireflies and an Eerie Ghost Town...There's Never a Dull Moment in the Smokies

It's the time of year when the Great Smoky Mountains will put you in the mind of a fairy tale. But that's because it's the time of year when fireflies convene and synchronize in East Tennessee for a one-of-a-kind, magical experience.

There seems to be no end to the number of ways you can enjoy spending time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and in May and June, if you're lucky enough to get a spot, you'll marvel at this eye-popping phenomenon.

If you're staying in Gatlinburg this time of year, I hope you've made plans to take in the synchronous fireflies in Elkmont. Breathtaking.

Fireflies are not the only thing creating a buzz in East Tennessee. (I meant that to be a pun, but it occurs to me fireflies don't buzz. Oh well.) If you're lovin' the lightning bugs and you're staying at Elkmont Campground, take some time to experience the Smoky Mountains village of the same name that no longer exists. Well, the structures are still there, and you can visit, but the old logging town is a thing of the past.

TripAdvisor contributors from all over the country give Elktown high marks. Here are a few examples...

"It's always a fun adventure here. We enjoyed seeing the cemetery especially this time. Roads were closed for most of the week we were there but this is always a magical place in the forest. A must see in any season, especially for those with kids." - Valerie G, North Port FL

"Fascinating history of Elkmont and the homes and social club located here. The park volunteer shared so much information about this area. We thoroughly enjoyed this hidden gem in the park." - MickeyGW65, Pittsburgh PA

"Easy parking and access. The NP is restoring the homes and you can walk through all of them to see this small vacation destination of the past. Didn't see any ghosts, but great site to visit." - Dan P, Beachwood OH
