Bruno Fernandes will keep key Man Utd job despite two blunders this season - The Mirror

Bruno Fernandes will remain as Manchester United's penalty taker despite already missing twice this season as Ruben Amorim underlined his faith in the Portuguese star to put those mistakes behind him.

For years Fernandes has been the man trusted to step up from 12 yards, scoring some crucial penalties, but this season he's spurned several opportunities. He skied a penalty at Fulham with United eventually having to settle for a point in west London.

More recently he again missed in the capital - this time at Brentford. With the Red Devils trailing 2-1 Fernandes saw his strike saved by Caoimhin Kelleher before the Manchester outfit went on to lose 3-1, heading more pressure on their head coach.

Amorim though has maintained that, should United get a penalty at Anfield when they take on Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, it will be their captain stepping up to shoulder the responsibility.

He said: "He's the main taker. He scores a lot of goals. If we need, we can change. But I'm fully confident that Bruno will sort that out."

Prior to this season's mishaps the last time Fernandes missed a penalty in the Premier League was against Chelsea in December 2023. United's penalty issues also cost them in the Carabao Cup as they were dumped out by League Two Grimsby - Bryan Mbeumo missing the crucial spot kick on that occasion.

Amorim though has been keen to remind doubters of Fernandes' largely impressive record. "I know that it's not easy for him," he said. "But I think he has 70 penalties. He misses like eight. Two with me. So I'm really annoyed with that. But he's really confident. He's training the penalties. He's trying to understand that people are watching the way he scores the penalties. He will be ready."

Fernandes has already shown himself more than capable of handling pressure situations this season. The Portugal playmaker was able to convert a late penalty in the 3-2 win over Burnley in August. On that occasion Amorim didn't even watch - convinced his skipper would convert.

He said: "I like to look at the fans and the reactions of the fans. But I was really confident because Bruno missed the last one. I was not thinking he was going to miss two in a row. So I was really confident trying to imagine what is going to happen in the final minutes."
