Museum's 'finds surgery' identifies pottery from 1600s and historic coins

Held between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, October 11, the event saw local people take mysterious objects they had found to the Witney and District Museum's Finds Officer.

There Ed Caswell helped identify the archaeological finds and offered expert insight into what they might be.

In addition he taught attendees, which included children, about recording finds and the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and allowed people to handle historic objects from the museum.

A spokesperson for the Witney and District Museum said: "The surgery was well attended.

"We had one young finder who came along with a selection of finds including a 400 year old pottery fragment and some willow ware and several pieces Ed has taken to add to the finds database."

Other objects to be brought in included some Jetons, an alternative form of currency used between the 13th and 18th centuries, and a glass object from a lady called Gill which no-one could identify and was found between two buildings.

Witney and District Museum is on the town's high street and is free to enter.

Its next event is a Bell History Tour of St Mary's Church in Witney, offering a chance to see the insides of the six-century old bell tower.

This is on Sunday, October 19, and must be booked in advance.
