A Lake County correctional officer was killed in a traffic accident early Saturday morning, according to officials.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department announced the officer's death in a Facebook post, but did not provide the name of the individual. The incident occurred at Route 30 and Austin Avenue in Schererville.
The officer, who has worked with the department for nearly nine years, was off duty when his car was struck by another vehicle. According to the social media post, he was transported to a Chicago area hospital and was later pronounced deceased.
The sheriff's office included the following statement in the post:
"Our hearts go out to the officer's family, friends and colleagues, and to everyone whose lives were touched by this dedicated public servant. We ask the community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
