I'm not a fan of Netflix expanding into games, but it has made Red Dead Redemption available on Android, iPhone, and iPad for the first time. And that is an interesting milestone.
"Experience John Marston's journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico to hunt down the remaining members of the Van der Linde Gang in Red Dead Redemption along with his fight to stop a virulent zombie plague in Undead Nightmare -- now available for the first time on iOS and Android mobile devices, and free on Netflix for subscribers," the announcement from game maker Rock Star Games explains.
This release isn't just about bringing this classic title to mobile: Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare are also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and if you owned a previous version of the game, the upgraded version is free and will carry over your in-game progress. But it's arrival on mobile is, of course, notable. As is the fact that you need a Netflix account to play the game on those platforms.
For those unfamiliar, Red Dead Redemption is a third-person action adventure game set in the Old West that first debuted in 2010, back when the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were still current. An immediate critical and financial smash hit with over 25 million units sold, the game was updated for various consoles over the years and spawned an equally successful 2018 sequel, though the original game didn't come to the PC until late 2024. It is considered one of the greatest video games ever made.
I installed the game on my iPad and am happy to see that you download and install it normally from the Apple App Store (or, on Android, from the Google Play Store), and not from within the Netflix app. That said, you do have to sign into Netflix to play the game, of course. This is a single player experience only, but in addition to the new Undead Nightmare, it includes bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition and other niceties. Plus, it still looks terrific and seems to work well on mobile.
