Exclusive phone call: Modi's refusal to back Trump's Nobel Prize push soured India-US ties, says report | Business Upturn

A new report has revealed details of an explosive phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump that significantly strained ties between the two leaders. According to The New York Times, Trump sought Modi's backing for his Nobel Peace Prize nomination during a call on June 17, 2025.

The call came weeks after India's May 7 Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. During the exchange, Trump claimed credit for "ending India-Pakistan hostilities" and further mentioned that Pakistan planned to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. He implied that New Delhi should also extend its support.

Prime Minister Modi reportedly rejected Trump's claim, clarifying that the India-Pakistan cease-fire was achieved directly between the two nations and that "US involvement had nothing to do with it." Sources familiar with the matter said Modi made it clear that India would not endorse Trump's Nobel aspirations.

Although Trump brushed aside the remarks at the time, the refusal is said to have become a major factor in the recent souring of India-US ties. The report noted: "The disagreement - and Mr Modi's refusal to engage on the Nobel - has played an outsize role in the relationship downturn."
