Nick Woltemade may finally be winning over even his sternest critics. The Newcastle United frontman has had to deal with a number of comments since his arrival from Stuttgart in a £69million summer deal.
None of those have come from Tyneside, of course. Newcastle fans appreciate the 23-year-old's style of play, his quality and his attitude, taking the player instantly to their hearts.
Five goals in six games have helped, of course. Woltemade got off to a stunning start and almost grabbed United a point at the Alex Stadium with an audacious backheeled goal against Brighton, only for Eddie Howe's side to lose 2-1.
It was a strike that had fans, pundits and even the opposition manager purring. "He scored an unbelievable goal," said Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler. "I am impressed with how fast he's adapted to the Premier League."
Those comments are in sharp contrast to noises coming out of Germany since the player's move to England. Notoriously, Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge showed a lack of class by labelling the Magpies as 'idiots' for paying such a high transfer fee, despite trying to sign Woltemade himself throughout the summer.
German media reports during the international break were at times just as scathing towards Woltemade, even after the player scored the winner against Northern Ireland with his first senior goal for his country.
Now, however, it appears the tide could be turning. Reporting on the striker's brilliant finish against Brighton, there was a lot of praise in the media.
The influential German sports outlet Bild hailed Woltemade's strike. They wrote: "Striker Nick Woltemade (23) recently scored his first goal for the German national team, firing Nagelsmann's team to a crucial victory against Northern Ireland. And Woltemade continues to make waves in the Premier League as well!
"In Newcastle United's match against Brighton, Woltemade (who signed from Stuttgart for €85million) scored his fourth league goal in five games. And what a goal!
"England marvels at a magical goal from BIG NICK!"
Kicker meanwhile, added: "The former Stuttgart player underlined his top form by brilliantly backheeling a cross in the penalty area into the far corner - an absolute dream goal. For Woltemade, it was his fourth goal in five league appearances, and his first away goal.
"However, it wasn't enough to secure a point. Welbeck, to whom the ball had bounced after Dan Burn's actually strong save, scored a brace in the 84th minute.
"Newcastle coach Eddie Howe was accordingly "disappointed" afterward, but once again had words of praise for his new striker, who has so far made Alexander Isak forgettable."
With Yoane Wissa still injured, Woltemade will lead the line again for Newcastle on Tuesday night in their Champions League clash against Benfica at St James' Park.
