Dumpster fire spreads to 115-year-old apartment building in SE Portland

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A dumpster fire spread to an apartment building in southeast Portland on Saturday morning, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

"I heard banging and I was like, 'Am I dreaming?'" said Seth Bermont, who lives just down the street. He said he could see the fire out his kitchen window.

The fire spread to The Casablanca at Southeast 17th and Madison Street around 3:30 a.m.

"I saw a fireman on top of the roof there, I saw a guy with an axe on the side of the building, I saw firetrucks, I saw a firetruck on my block too," Bermont said.

Before crews were able to put out the fire in a dumpster near the base of the building, flames had spread and badly burned the front, according to PF&R.

Firefighters said residents were evacuated due to the smoke from the fire but no one was reported hurt.

The Casablanca was built in 1910, according to Capital Property Management, making the Spanish-style building 115 years old.

Bermont said it's sad to see such a unique building so badly damaged.

"I'm just so glad that nobody got hurt, nobody lost their lives," Bermont said.
