GALLATIN, Tenn. (WSMV) - Sumner County Schools is honoring the life of Charlie Kirk Tuesday, on what would have been his 32nd birthday on Tuesday.
The district is holding a Charlie Kirk Day of Peaceful Civic Discourse.
The resolution to enact the day was approved by the school board in late September.
Kirk was fatally shot while holding an open forum discussion with people on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10. He was the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, and rose to fame by actively engaging people on political issues, regardless of their stances.
Here are instructions on how to watch WSMV4 live on various platforms.
The school board wanted to honor Kirk and what they described as the conservative activist's contribution to civic education and public service.
Some community members criticized the move as tying the school district to a political figure, while SCS said the day isn't being held to endorse any political ideology.
